Following the extraction of multiple teeth, bleeding is anticipated. If bleeding occurs, position a gauze pad directly over the bleeding socket and apply pressure by biting down for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, use a moist tea bag for the same amount of time. Should bleeding recur, abstain from hot liquids and exercise and elevate your head. Contact our office immediately if bleeding continues. Unless directed otherwise, do not remove the immediate denture. Some oozing around the denture sides is normal.
For the initial 24 hours only, use ice packs externally on the operated areas as advised.
For managing pain, use the prescription provided. If the pain doesn't start to lessen in 2 days or if it worsens after 2 days, please call our office. If an antibiotic has been prescribed, make sure to complete the course unless otherwise directed by your surgeon.
Avoid rinsing your mouth on the first post-operative day. After the first day, use a warm salt water rinse every 3 to 4 times daily, especially after meals to clear out any food particles and debris that might be lodged in the operated area.
Limit your diet to liquids and soft foods that you find comfortable to eat. As the wounds heal, you can gradually introduce more foods into your diet.
The process of removing multiple teeth is quite distinct from a single or double extraction. The bone has to be reshaped and smoothed prior to denture insertion, which may lead to several normal conditions:
The operated area will swell, reaching its peak in 3 to 4 days. Swelling and discoloration around the eye may occur. Remember to apply ice as directed for the first 24 hours.
A sore throat may develop due to the proximity of the throat muscles to the extraction sites. This is a normal occurrence and should resolve within 2-3 days.
If the corners of your mouth are stretched, they might dry out and crack. Keep your lips moisturized with a product like Vaseline.
A slight elevation in temperature may occur for 24-48 hours. If your temperature remains elevated, contact our office.
If you have immediate dentures, you may develop sore spots. Generally, your dentist will see you within 24-48 hours post-surgery to make necessary adjustments to alleviate these sore areas. Not addressing this can lead to severe denture sores, which could potentially prolong the healing process.
