After Placement of Dental Implants

Top Oral Surgeons & Dental Implant Specialists in St. Louis, MO & Belleville, IL

Following the placement of your dental implants at MOSAIC, it is vital to adhere to the following post-operative instructions to ensure the success of your surgery and the quickest possible recovery.

  1. Protect the Surgical Area: For the day following surgery, please avoid disturbing the surgical site. This includes rinsing, spitting, or touching the wound. You may notice a metal healing abutment emerging through the gum tissue - this is a normal part of the healing process.
  2. Managing Bleeding: It's normal to observe some blood or redness in your saliva for up to 24 hours post-operation. In the case of excessive bleeding (where your mouth rapidly fills with blood), control it by placing a gauze pad over the bleeding area and biting down for 30 minutes. If bleeding persists, do not hesitate to call us for further guidance.
  3. Controlling Swelling: Swelling is a common post-surgery event. To reduce it, use an ice pack, or a bag or towel filled with ice, and place it on the cheek near the surgery area. Do this as directed for the initial 24 hours post-surgery.
  4. Dietary Recommendations: Maintain a high fluid intake. Avoid hot foods or beverages. For the day of your surgery, consume soft food and liquids. Resume your regular diet as soon as you feel able to unless advised otherwise by Dr. Noble.
  5. Oral Hygiene: Good oral hygiene greatly aids healing. Warm saltwater rinses (a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) should be used at least 4-5 times a day, particularly after meals. You can brush your teeth and the healing abutments, but be gentle around the surgical sites in the initial days.
  6. Physical Activity: Keep your physical activities to a minimum immediately after your surgery. Engaging in exercise may cause throbbing or bleeding.
  7. Wearing your Prosthesis: Whether or not you should use partial dentures, flippers, or full dentures immediately following surgery varies from patient to patient. We will discuss this with you during your pre-operative consultation.

Remember, your well-being is our highest priority at MOSAIC, and our team, led by Dr. Noble, is always here to assist you through your recovery.
